William Banks-Blaney the founder and buyer for William Vintage recently shared his tips with Rachael Dove, a fashion writer for the Telegraph UK on how to buy vintage clothes. Having spent over ten years in Vintage Clothing Retail before launching a wholesale supply company, I would have to agree with much of what William says when it comes to finding a great vintage piece to add to your personal collection.

In the article we are reminded that you need to try everything on to see how it fits. Just don’t look at the size and make a guess as to weather it will fit or not. Vintage Clothes were designed to fit the body where as modern clothing is made to fit a hanger. If the color or texture catch your eye, take it to the dressing room to see how it will fit.

We are also reminded to start small. If you are new to buying vintage for yourself start with a jacket or a sweater. See how it fits and how you can make it work with other garments in your closet. once you get the hang of it you can start purchasing dresses or pants that you think you will like.

Another thing to keep in mind is to look for flaws or damage. the last thing that you want to do is get the garment home only to find a big stain or tear that you did not notice in the shop.
